Standing Up for Citizensâ Rights
Even after much hard work and many compromises, the Constitution still was not complete. Leaders in the states saw many flaws that had to be fixed. The key issue was that the Constitution did not include protection for individual rights. It mainly addressed how the states and the central government would run the country. But leaders from several states wanted to make sure that individual rights would not get trampled on by the government. They believed that certain freedoms were inalienable (guaranteed). Just like people have the right to breathe air, they also have other rights based solely on the fact that they are alive. Those inalienable rights had to be protected so no government could ever take them away. A Bill of Rights was needed, but it would take four more years after ratifying the Constitution, and several visionary men, to create it.
THE BILL OF RIGHTSâ1791
Because Congress did not think it had the authority to change the original wording of the Constitution, the only way to fix it was to add amendments (revisions) at the end. After much debate, Congress approved ten amendments to the Constitution, and these are known as the âBill of Rights.â They set limits on government power. The founders believed that government could not intrude on peopleâs natural rights, such as the right to speak freely, assemble in groups, be secure in their homes, and worship as they please.
